CNY Steamboat Challenge 2017 Results

The third annual CNY Steamboat Challenge was held at the MOST on Saturday, October 14, 2017.

A total of 76 students comprising 31 teams participated in the Steamboat design, build, and compete STEM competition.

Students built a boat out of recycled materials, including a metal engine that produces stem to propel the boat when heated by a tea light candle. Teams of between one and four students in grades four through 12 raced their boats on 3 inches of water inside 10-foot-long inflatable tracks.

The competition was divided into three levels: Division I (grades 4-6), Division II (grades 7-8) and Division III (grades 9-12). Here are the winners:

Division I
First place: Krimp Boat of Morgan Road Elementary; 44 seconds
Second place: Team RJ of Stonehedge Elementary; 73 seconds
Third place: Sea Stars of Hughes Elementary; 86 seconds

Division II
First place: The Cheetah of Syracuse Academy of Science; 36 seconds
Second place: Got Science? of Brookfield Central; 68 seconds
Third place: Mermaid of Brookfield Central; 147 seconds

Division III
First place: Team Supreme (no school name); 15 seconds
Second place: Hopefully this Works of Syracuse High; 16 seconds
Third place: Tessa Boat of Syracuse Academy of Science; 19 seconds

Winners received a medal and the winning schools received a plaque.

After final heats, top teams in each Division raced against each other to see who would take home the Admiral’s Trophy. The 2017 winner was Division III team, Team Supreme.

CNY Steamboat Challenge is organized by the MOST and Central New York Chapter of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and sponsored by SRC, The Dorothy and Marshall M. Reisman Foundation, OBG, and the MOST. Support is provided by Lockheed Martin, NASA, Syracuse University’s College of Engineering and Computer Science, and the Technology Alliance of Central New York (TACNY).
