Judges Information
The 2008 Greater Syracuse Scholastic Science Fair needs judges! Make that "The GSSSF needs many judges," roughly one for every participating student.

Join our Science Fair for 350-400+ students in grades 5-12 on Sunday, March 30 at Solvay High School in Syracuse.

We group the Senior Level students (grades 9-12) by exhibit category, e.g. physics, botany. Senior Fair judging teams, organized by preferred judging category, conduct a first round of judging, using pre-determined criteria. Then, with an experienced coordinator, the team leaders select those students going on to State and International Science Fair competitions and receiving other honors.

For Junior Level students (grades 5-8), each judge individually interviews an assigned group of students, scoring each exhibit and interview against a pre-determined set of criteria. The judges assigned to that group then meet to discuss their interviews and assign awards.

We also need judges for both levels to select winners in approximately 15-20 categories of special awards contributed by various professional organizations and government agencies.

Qualifications for Judging the Junior Level

Junior Level judges need an interest in science, technology and innovation; must enjoy working with middle-school students and should be able to assess students' efforts in a logical manner.

Qualifications for Judging the Senior Level

Senior Level judges must have a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a science, engineering, technology, medicine, education, business or legal field. They must assess a student's exhibit on the basis of creativity, scientific thought, thoroughness and clarity in a competitive environment.

Things you need to know:

  • We provide lunch and training.
  • You must complete the "Judge Registration Form" whether this is your first or tenth year!
  • So you know someone who would like to be a judge? Send them to this page.
  • When you are applying to be a judge, you may be either a special awards judge or a GSSSF judge but not both.
