The Dr. and Mrs. Herbert J. Silverman PLANETARIUM

Follow the stars in the 50-seat Silverman Planetarium with its 24-foot domed ceiling which plays host to thousands of stars brilliantly displayed by our Apollo Star Projector. Lean back as the lights dim and prepare to meet the constellations.

Regular Showtimes:
Saturdays and Sundays 11:15 a.m.:
Zoo in the Sky (a show for young children)
Zoo in the Sky is for younger children. It explores the seasonal animal constellations and the stories, myths, and legends about them.

Saturdays and Sundays 3:15 p.m.:
Seasonal Sky
Seasonal Sky takes you on a trip through the night sky with stories, constellations, and interesting astronomical sights. The show changes with the seasons, so make sure to come back again and again.

Holiday Themed Shows:
To celebrate the holiday season, the Silverman Planetarium will be offering two holiday-themed shows.

Santa's Sky: The View from the North Pole
Did you ever wonder what the sky looks like from the North Pole? How did Santa navigate at night before the invention of GPS? This presentation uses our Apollo star projector to give us a view of the night sky from the North Pole. We will talk about the Big and Little Dippers and how to use the North Star to find your way at night. Santa's Sky is recommended for children and adults over 4 years old. This show now features live Native American style flute music.
Length: 20 minutes

Show Times:
December 10 & 11, 17 & 18, 24, 26 & 27, 30 & 31 at 1 p.m.

The Christmas Star: Theories on the Star of Bethlehem
This planetarium show brings the audience on a trip back in time to look at the sky as it was two thousand years ago and tries to answer the question 'What was the Christmas star?'" Stories of the Christmas star have inspired people for two thousand years with both miraculous and scientific explanations given to describe the star. This show reviews the astronomical candidates for the star's true nature. The lecture style portion of the presentation uses historical and scientific evidence to review the story of the Magi and the star in the Gospel of St. Matthew. Because of the length, longer lecture period, and information that is potentially confusing to young children, The Christmas Star is recommended for adults and children eight and older. This show now features live Native American style flute music.
Length: 45 minutes

Show Times:
December 10 & 11, 17 & 18, 24, 26 & 27, 30 & 31 at 2 p.m.

To help illustrate the planetarium shows, the MOST Education Staff utilizes a computer program entitled “Stellarium.”  This is a free open source planetarium for your computer. It shows a realistic sky in 3D, just like what you see with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope. You can download the free software for home use at stellarium.org. Download our Stellarium First Time User Walk-Through: Stellarium Walk-Through for First Time Users.

The Planetarium is also available for Special Shows for groups of 20 or more. Call 425-9068 ext. 2141 for details.
