Since its beginning in 1974, the Nikon International Small World Competition recognizes the achievements of photography through the light microscope. The competition is a showcase of the best photomicrography from the widest array of scientific disciplines. Small World provides a glimpse into a world that most have never seen. It is a window into a universe that can only be seen through the lens of a microscope. Photomicrography technically and visually documents scientific data, allowing it to serve the greater science community. These images maintain a standard of structure, color, composition and content while presenting a photo of beauty all can appreciate. Entries of the Nikon International Small World Competition are judged on the basis of originality, informational content, technical proficiency and visual impact.
