Nikon Small World

Since its beginning in 1974, the Nikon International Small World Competition recognizes the achievements of photography through the light microscope. The competition is a showcase of the best photomicrography from the widest array of scientific disciplines. Small World provides a glimpse into a world that most have never seen. It is a window into a universe that can only be seen through the lens of a microscope.

Photomicrography technically and visually documents scientific data, allowing it to serve the greater science community. These images maintain a standard of structure, color, composition and content while presenting a photo of beauty all can appreciate. Entries of the Nikon International Small World Competition are judged on the basis of originality, informational content, technical proficiency and visual impact.


The Nikon International Small World Competition has celebrated the accomplishments of photomicrographers for 36 years, making it one of the oldest, largest and most respected competitions of its kind. The competition serves as a forum, allowing a display of the beautiful complexity of life and capturing the point where art and science intersect.
